Linux Creator Linus Torvalds Skeptical of Cryptocurrencies

Finnish-American software engineer Linus Torvalds, best known for creating the Linux operating system, has expressed skepticism towards cryptocurrencies in a recent forum post. Torvalds referred to cryptocurrencies as “a great vehicle for scams” and likened them to Ponzi schemes aimed at finding the next unsuspecting investor.

Despite his deep technical expertise and involvement in the open-source movement, Torvalds does not believe in the potential of cryptocurrencies. He humorously remarked, “Nor do I believe in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, or the Easter bunny.”

A Satoshi Candidate?

Linus Torvalds, who also created the distributed version control system Git, was once rumored to be the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. Speculations were fueled by alleged actions, such as changing a name in the Linux Kernel to “Name = I am Satoshi.” However, Torvalds dismissed these rumors as “empty noise” and clarified that he is not the legendary Bitcoin creator.

While Torvalds has the technical abilities that could align with being Satoshi Nakamoto, he has debunked any such association. The rumors were likely a result of a playful prank using GitHub’s platform.

No Technological Singularity

Furthermore, Linus Torvalds also criticized the concept of technological singularity, dismissing it as a fanciful “bedtime story for children.” Despite acknowledging the appeal of the sci-fi concept, Torvalds pointed out the limitations of continuous exponential growth, stating that we are approaching those boundaries.

As a prominent figure in the tech world, Torvalds’ perspective on cryptocurrencies and the idea of technological singularity sheds light on his pragmatic approach towards these evolving technologies.
